Eddie Cheever shone in Formula Three and then in Formula Two
and was looking to jump into Formula One at the end of 1977 at the age
of 19. A seat at Ferrari seemed a possibility, but Gilles Villeneuve got
there first. Eddie rolled out for Theodore and had a one-off ride for
Hesketh in 1978, but elected to return to Formula Two, and it was not
until 1980 that he graduated full-time, with the new Osella team. Sadly,
the Italian team was out of its depth and he was able to show his hand
only when he moved to Tyrrell in 1981, putting in five points-scoring
drives. He hit the podium in 1982 with Ligier, peaking with second at
Detroit and this helped him land a ride for 1983. However, the ride was
alongside Alain Prost at Renault and Cheever could not live with the
comparison, even though his sixth overall in the final standings marked
his best year.
